(Singapore) – On the 19th October 2013, volunteers from Alfa Tech together with Hewlett Packard, ShiftRunner, Ichor Systems, APC Schneider and Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities organized a community service project to repair and paint six senior citizens’ homes in Bukit Merah. This was one of the numerous projects that were part of American Chamber of Commerce’s Corporate Community Day (CCD) 2013, Singapore’s largest corporate social responsibility initiative this year which involved over 80 companies working with 50-plus beneficiaries.

Planning for the project began in July with Alfa Tech’s discussion with Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities’ (THKMC). THKMC approached the senior citizens in Bukit Merah and identified homes that would need sprucing up while Alfa Tech created a work plan, and sourced for volunteers and sponsors.

On the day itself, more than 25 volunteers turned up in the morning and afternoon to clean and paint the homes. They also did simple repair work like replacing old light bulbs, covering cracks with putty, fixing broken window panes and assembling a brand new bed frame.

The occasion was graced by the new US Ambassador to Singapore, Kirk Wagar, his wife, Crystal, CCD Chairperson, Nancy Frohman and Acting Executive Director of AmCham, Greg Tirrell. They visited two homes where they chatted with the residents and volunteers and helped to paint part of a wall.

The team lead from Hewlett Packard, Elizabeth Henrnandez, said, “We certainly seem to have   left a good impression among the residents. They were offering their apartments for us to paint next! Seriously, I’m glad we were able to collaborate on this important project and make a difference to a few elderly Singaporeans whom we don’t get to see or interact with very often.”

Alfa Tech would like to thank all the volunteers for their time and effort in making the homes of a few elderly folk more comfortable and putting smiles on their faces.
